COMMUNITY RESPONSE FUNDING

The United Way of Cape Breton announces that Community Response Funding is now available for programs and services throughout Cape Breton Island. Any eligible organizations are invited to submit proposals after review of the application guidelines and requirements.

Challenges arise everyday for everyone and many people need assistance to cope with these challenges. A list of programs and agencies funded by United Way is available to you or to someone you know that needs assistance. Member Agencies

DID YOU KNOW ?

Adult Learning Assc. last year, provided upgrading and literacy classes to 970 Cape Breton adults (19 and over). The Association offers family literacy programs for children in grades 2 to 6 and their parents. Such programs are held in Sydney, Louisburg, and Glace Bay.

Thanks to All Kids Services, nearly 700 Cape Breton youth and their families were treated to family activities such as x-mas parties and summer outings.

Bereaved Families of Cape Breton helped 252 families deal with the loss of a loved one through their Grief Support Programs.

Canadian National Institute for the Blind assisted 1023 visually impaired Cape Bretoners with Rehabilitation Services, Assistive Technology Products, and a CNIB Library for those with print disabilities last year. CNIB is a source of support, information, and most importantly, hope for those in need.

The Canadian Paraplegic Association assisted 82 Cape Bretoners last year by way of peer support and rehabilitation services.

CB Centre for Sexual Health provided over 1700 students with seminars on healthy sexuality, STD's, and birth control.

During the cold winter months CB Community Housing supplied nearly 100 Cape Bretoners with shelter, meals, and laundry services.

With the help of United Way, last year, CB Metro Victorian Order of Nurses was able to assist over 4700 ill residents with Foot Care Clinics, Healthy Living Programs, and a brand new initiative called the Telephone Reassurance Program.

Children's Aid Society serves an average of 134 youth per month with programs such as Child protection, Child Care, Family Support, Adoption, and Residential Programs.

Because of United Way's help, Community Involvement of the Disabled provided 847 disabled persons with advocacy, referral, and recreational services.

Elizabeth Fry Society contributed to the addictions recovery and the successful return to community living for over 1000 Cape Breton women.

Help Line gives support to over 250 Cape Bretoners per month with telephone emotional and suicide intervention counseling.

Hospice / Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton provided 527 palliative care patients with beds, walkers, wheel chairs, and also, with support and consult services.

Island Community Justice Society helps put hundreds of CB young offenders and victims back on the right "track" by bringing youth, victims, support people, and community together after an incident of crime. The Society also offers a "Youth Repay Program" and "Victim Support Services" to provide guidance to those involved in a crime.

Northside Association for Community Living has 60 full time participants in various employment, recreational, social, and interpersonal support programs.

Society Of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Nova Scotians,www.sdhhns.org last year aided 1275 individuals with programs such as Deaf Literacy, Sign Language Classes, and the "New Horizons for Seniors" project.

Last year, St. John Ambulance volunteers contributed nearly 10,000 hours to over 250 Cape Breton events for first aid coverage and made close to 2000 visits to residents of 31 Long Term Care Facilities in order to provide comfort and pet companionship. They also provided free First Aid Training to 286 High School Students in 2005.

Volunteer Resource Centre assists an average of 411 residents a month with "Meals on Wheels" and other volunteer resource activities.

YMCA of Cape Breton assists 70-80 members a month with fitness programs, day camps, and youth leadership development.
